About the only comparison that can steal the Mac mini's thunder is that if you are OK with a full-sized Windows desktop like the Compaq Presario CQ5210f, you can pay a lot less ($320) for better performance (1:02 WME, 2:51 CS4). Let's face it, you'd tear your hair out waiting almost 15 minutes to wait for your single-core CPU-equipped nettop to come back after doing any task, let alone a group of ten Photoshop filters.

Photoshop comparison numbers were run in Windows, but they were even faster in Mac OS X at 2:45. This shows that the Mac mini is much more capable of doing the light photo and video manipulation that a casual user will need to do from time to time. This seems unimpressive until you note that the nettops put up against the Mac mini take from 2:02 to 5:28 to run Windows Media Encoder and a glacial 6:18 to 14:45 to run our CS4 script.

The Mac mini finished our Windows Media Encoder test in 1 minute 17 seconds, and our Photoshop CS4 test in 3:45. The Mac mini's 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P7550 processor can run rings around the Intel Atom processors found in nettops, even the dual-core ones. The Mac mini has a much better processor than most nettops. Since the $599 model I looked at is so compact, I would've like to have seen a HDMI port (or an adapter), but the reviewed model at least can hook up to a standard DVI or mini-DisplayPort monitor like Apple's 24-inch LED Cinema Display ($899). The system's 160GB hard drive is average for the USFF and nettop range, and you can get larger drives (up to 500GB) in Apple's online store, or get the server-oriented version of the Mac mini ($999 list) which has two 500GB drives (one replaces the DVD burner in the Mac OS X Server model). The Mac mini comes with 2GB of memory standard, and while that's the bare minimum we recommend for Windows 7, it's enough to run Mac OS X 10.6 smoothly. Add all that to the $599 starting price of the mini, and you're talking about a lot of money, especially when you consider nettops like the Acer Aspire Revo R3610 is $330 with a wireless keyboard and mouse. As it is, this adds almost $100 to the cost of the system.

I understand it's been part of the Mac mini mantra for over four years now (BYODKM, or 'Bring Your Own Display, Keyboard, and Mouse), but Apple really should think about including the wired keyboard and mouse in for free, or at least as a discounted bundle.

Apple offers a wireless Bluetooth keyboard and Magic Mouse for $69 each, or you can get the wired versions for $20 less. Like other compact desktops, you'll need an external monitor to run the Mac mini, but unlike the others, you also have to get your keyboard and mouse separately. There are five USB 2.0 ports, a FireWire 800 port, mini DVI and mini DisplayPort out back. It comes with a slot-loading DVD burner on the front. Its 2 by 6.5 by 6.5-inch (HWD) case is essentially unchanged, with a mostly aluminum and plastic body. The Apple Mac mini (Core 2 Duo 2.26GHz) looks like every other Mac mini, especially from the front.

It's still an attractive alternative to the Windows 7 nettop or low priced PC, but it is getting long in the tooth, particularly at the $599 entry-price point. But now, there's a whole class of power-saving, low-cost nettops like the Acer Aspire Revo R3610 that are infringing on the mini's turf. Fast forward to 2010: The Apple Mac mini is still the entry point for the Apple faithful and it continues to be a good, cheap computer. Back then it was the only ultra small form factor (USFF) desktop worthy of the name (6.5-inches square, 2-inches high). The Apple Mac mini (Core 2 Duo 2.26GHz) ($599 list) still looks just like it did when it was introduced in 2005.
